International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)

IAVI’s vision is a world without AIDS. IAVI materialized as a means to assist in addressing the development of preventative HIV vaccines, particularly in HIV/AIDS burdened countries. The Initiative began in 1994 as a not-for-profit organization in a public-private, Product Development Partnership (PDP). Operating in this capacity assists IAVI in sourcing the vaccine expertise and assisted with establishing other vital partnerships for HIV vaccine research and development.

IAVI have a strong history of advocacy for the Research and Development of the AIDS vaccine by partnering with multiple organisations and countries worldwide. In 1998, IAVI developed the first Scientific Blueprint for AIDS Vaccine Development through collaboration for HIV prevention, particularly in Africa and Asia.

Since the beginning of IAVI, there was a need to establish partnerships in HIV/AIDS burdened countries. Thus a network of clinical research centres and local research institutions was established. Over a decade on and IAVI has established partners in 25 countries to assist with the research, design and development of AIDS vaccine candidates.
